Oushak Rugs in History
Oushak rugs originated in the city of Oushak in Turkey. Oushak has been a production center of Turkish rugs since the 15th century. In the late 15th century the "design revolution" took place. The weaving and design practices were separated from each other. Before, producing carpets was part of the nomad culture, meeting people's daily needs, but for the first time the works of designing and weaving rugs were split in two.
Oushak was the center of this new method of production because it had easy access to wool (the wool comes from Balikesir, Oushak and Kutahya from alive sheep), natural dyes, & had access to the international market.
Oushak rugs of 15th century Turkey are used in paintings of Lorenzo Lotto and Hans Holbein.

Usak rugs, woven in the 16th and 17 centuries, represent the second golden age of Turkish rugs after Seljuk rugs. Beside their local use in the Ottoman soil, Usak rugs were exported great deal to the European countries. These rugs decorated the palaces, churches, cathedrals and houses of rich in Europe.
